Shawn Cafferky collection. [1997].

The collection consists of interviews recorded with naval personnel, together with transcripts. The interviews refer to the experimentational squadron VX10, and the testing and use of the Sikorsky CH-124 Sea King helicopter. The collection also includes interviews and essays from students in HIST 394 class taught by Dr. Cafferky.

Y Station was attached to HMCS Givenchy at HMC Dockyard, Esquimalt, a shore facility. Personnel were bussed up daily to Gordon Head to this top secret facility. Men, later Wrens listened to Japanese signals and these were later sent to Americans for translation and intelligence. Shawn Cafferky received his B.A. in history from the University of Victoria in 1987, and his M.A. in 1989. He then earned his Ph.D. in history at Carleton University in 1996. He was employed as an historian with the Directorate of History and Heritage, Department of National Defence, Ottawa, from 1990-1996, where he was employed on the naval team that is currently writing the official history of the Royal Canadian Navy.
